Bargo, a small town in the Macarthur Region of New South Wales, Australia, located in the Wollondilly Shire, is steeped in both Aboriginal and colonial history. The name 'Bargo' is believed to be derived from the Aboriginal name 'Barago', signifying 'cripple', 'thick scrub', or 'brushwood'. Early records from 1807 by George Caley mention 'Barago' in correspondence with Sir Joseph Banks. The area was known for its challenging terrain, dense with thick scrub, making it difficult for early explorers and convicts to traverse. This rugged landscape earned the area the nickname 'Bargo Brush'.
Bargo played a significant role in early European exploration and settlement. It is noteworthy as the location where the first recorded sightings of the lyrebird, koala, and wombat by European settlers took place. However, it is also near the site of a tragic event in 1816, when settlers forced local Aborigines to walk off a cliff, shooting those who refused.
In terms of heritage, Bargo boasts several notable sites, including the Nepean Dam and the Wirrimbirra Sanctuary. The Nepean Dam, part of the Upper Nepean catchment, is an important water source with an Art Deco dam that was completed in 1935. The Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, which focuses on environmental and wildlife education, features over 200 acres of preserved native bushland, home to various native Australian species.
Bargo also has a vibrant community with local sports teams and organizations, including the Wollondilly AFL Club and the Yerrinbool-Bargo Bushrangers football team. The area offers natural attractions like Mermaid Pools and the Potholes on the Bargo River, popular for swimming and social gatherings.
