Camden, a town in eastern New South Wales, Australia, is situated on the Nepean section of the Hawkesbury River. The area's history is closely tied to the Aboriginal people and European settlement. Originally, Camden was part of the land belonging to the Gandangara people of the Southern Highlands, called Benkennie, meaning 'dry land'. To the north were the Muringong, southernmost of the Darug people, and to the east, the Tharawal people.
The European history of Camden began with John Macarthur, a key figure in the establishment of the Australian wool industry. The locality, initially known as Cowpastures, was renamed Camden Park in 1805, in honor of John Jeffreys Pratt, 2nd Earl Camden, who was the secretary of state for the colonies at that time. Macarthur was instrumental in breeding Merino sheep in Australia, laying the foundation for the country's wool industry. The village of Camden was surveyed in 1836 and later proclaimed a municipality in 1889.
Dairying has been a significant part of Camden's economy, rising to prominence in the district and maintaining its importance. The area also engages in coal mining, livestock raising, and the cultivation of fruits, grapes, and vegetables. The Hume Highway from Sydney, which is about 35 miles northeast, passes through Camden.
