Cawdor, a village in New South Wales, Australia, has a history that intertwines with the indigenous Tharawal and Gundungurra people. Its European history began as part of John Macarthur's extensive land holdings, which formed a large part of the Camden Park estate. Cawdor is located west of the Old Hume Highway and is surrounded by notable natural landmarks like Razorback Mountain and Westbrook Lane, about 65 kilometers southwest of Sydney.
The village was the first to develop in the Cowpastures district, predating the town of Camden by over two decades. Governor Lachlan Macquarie named the area Cawdor, honoring his wife's Scottish heritage. In 1812, Macquarie established a cattle station in Cawdor, which grew into a large government settlement. The village had its beginnings around 1803-04 with several huts built for shepherds and cattle overseers. By 1824, a court building, later known as Fletcher's Gaol, was erected in the village.
The early 1830s saw Cawdor grow as a settlement, with the establishment of a church, school, store, and blacksmith shop. Agriculture flourished in the 1850s, with wheat from Cawdor winning gold medals at the Great Exhibition in London. A national school was established in the village in 1888, which is now Cawdor Public School.
Despite its early growth, Cawdor's development slowed down, partly due to a lack of a reliable water supply and the expansion of nearby Camden. However, the village continued to thrive in rural industries like hydroponic vegetable growing, poultry farming, and horse breeding. Significant historical structures in Cawdor include the Cawdor Uniting Church, which dates back to the 1850s, and is a resting place for many early settlers.
Today, Cawdor is characterized by its rich history, natural beauty, and continued preservation of its rural heritage. The village, while experiencing housing development in its surrounding areas, remains largely undeveloped due to floodplain restrictions.
