Cobbitty, a semi-rural town in the Macarthur Region near Camden, southwest of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, has a history deeply rooted in the early development of the region. The area was originally home to the Muringong, the southernmost of the Darug people. European settlement in Cobbitty began in the early 19th century, closely following the establishment of John Macarthur's Camden Park Estate nearby.
Governor Macquarie named the area Cobbedee, and the land was granted to Gregory Blaxland in 1812, who called it Cubbady Farm. The village of Cobbitty, nestled on the Nepean River, is renowned for its lush country views and beautifully kept historic buildings.
By the early 1880s, most farmers in the area were farming dairy cattle, and in 1889, the Cobbitty United Dairy Company was formed, building a butter factory in Cobbitty. The region's rich agricultural history is further highlighted by the establishment of the Cobbitty Cricket Club in 1896, which is still active today, having expanded with the growing area.
The area is also known for Camden Airport, first developed by the Macarthur-Onslow family in the late 1930s. During World War II, the government purchased the site, and it became home to the Central Flying School. After the war, the airport was converted to civil operations and is currently used for various activities including gliding and skydiving.
Cobbitty has also been a hub for education and recreation. The Teen Ranch, established in 1961, is a non-denominational Christian holiday camp. The University of Sydney relocated the Plant Breeding Institute to Cobbitty in 1991, which includes facilities for the study of cereal genetics and breeding, among other agricultural research.
Today, Cobbitty remains largely rural, resisting urban development, and is not part of the designated South West Growth Centre. The village features a general store, tearooms, cafe, art and craft gallery, a rural fire station, and a scout hall. It is home to turf farms, orchards, an equestrian club, pony club, and horse breeding and breaking centers.
