Mittagong, located in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, has a rich history that intertwines Aboriginal heritage and European settlement. The town's name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word, possibly meaning "little mountain," "a companion," or "plenty of native dogs." The area was once inhabited by the Dharawal Aborigines.
European exploration in Mittagong began in the late 18th century, with the first European party led by ex-convict John Wilson in 1798. Wilson had been living with the Aborigines and was the first European to sight the koala and lyrebird in the area. Prominent early explorers like John Warby, George Caley, and the Hume brothers also explored the area.
Governor Macquarie played a crucial role in facilitating settlement by constructing the Old South Road through the area. The first European settler, William Charker, received a land grant in Mittagong in 1823. By the 1830s, bushrangers began to frequent the dense scrub of the district.
Mittagong's industrial history is noteworthy. In 1848, the Fitzroy Iron Works, Australia's first iron smelter, was established near the town, leading to the development of a community around it. The venture initially succeeded but eventually failed, leading to the closure of the plant in 1857 and again in 1866.
The arrival of the railway in 1867 brought significant change to Mittagong, with the rail stop becoming known as Mittagong, and the post office changing its name to Mittagong. Today, Mittagong is a thriving rural town, known for its history, scenery, and attractions like Mount Gibraltar, Lake Alexandra, and various wineries. The town is also home to an abandoned historical building complex known as "The Maltings," which served as malthouses for the old major beer company of New South Wales, Tooth and Co.
