Narellan, a suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, has a rich history dating back to its original inhabitants, the Tharawal people, along with the Darug and Gandangara peoples. The suburb is located within the Camden Council local government area and is part of the Macarthur region.
The area's European history began with wool pioneer John Macarthur, who was granted 5,000 acres in what was then known as Cowpastures (now Camden) in 1805. This land was used primarily for farming over the next two centuries until Sydney's suburban expansion reached Camden and modern suburbs like Narellan were developed for housing.
Narellan is known for landmarks such as its modern shopping center, Narellan Town Centre, historic St Thomas Chapel, Studley Park House, and a golf course. The suburb also has a rich railway and industrial history. The Narellan railway station, operational from 1882 to 1963, was a hub of local economic activity, connecting the village with Camden and Campbelltown. During World War II, Narellan hosted defense establishments including an army camp and the Eastern Command Training School at Studley Park.
Despite its small size up until the 1950s, Narellan began to grow significantly in the late 20th century. This growth was spurred by the Sydney Region Outline Plan of 1968 and the Macarthur Development Board. By the 1990s, Narellan had overtaken Camden as the commercial center of the local district, marked by the development of the Narellan Town Centre.
Today, Narellan is a vibrant suburb, blending its historical heritage with modern development and amenities, and continues to be a key part of the Macarthur region's growth and development.
