Prestons, a suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. The suburb was named after a local Irish family who ran a small post office at the corner of Romana Square in the 1910s. This family, known for their generosity and community spirit, became synonymous with the post office, and eventually, the area itself was named Prestons in 1972.
The suburb's development began with significant land grants in the area. Notable early landowners included Donald McLeod, who was granted 400 hectares in 1829. McLeod built a small cottage named Bernera, reflective of his roots in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The land changed hands in the 1850s to Allan MacPherson, a notable figure in Australian history. The Bernera homestead, built by MacPherson, was a prominent structure in the area until it was destroyed by fire in 1986.
